How to Optimize VR Live Network Transmission

At the previous conference, I actually had a question that I didn't ask about. That is how to optimize the VR broadcast network transmission. We all know that the amount of data on VR broadcast is several times larger than that of traditional broadcast. At present, the average level of network bandwidth in China is still not very high. Therefore, if VR video and VR broadcast are to be popularized quickly, optimizing network transmission is a must. Right problem.

I learned earlier that the micro whale VR is involved in the investment in the United States VR live company NextVR, and NextVR has some unique technology in the network transmission, then the future micro whale VR will not combine NextVR technology to improve VR video and VR Live network transmission?

For this issue, Xu Xian said that although the micro whale VR is involved in investing in NextVR, when the cooperation between the two businesses can be launched in China, there is no clear timetable. “Our own judgment may be at the end of this year or early next year. By that time, we will select some of the country’s top sports competitions and join NextVR in the VR broadcast.”

At the same time, Xu Xian pointed out that the use of NextVR's technical solutions also have many limitations: First, all devices on the site must use NextVR, followed by NextVR transmission data format is not the same as other companies, including the local player and its SDK, Finally, the NextVR solution requires high performance for the terminal equipment (mobile phone). “NextVR's solution saves the bandwidth of intermediate transmissions, but it increases the amount of calculations in the field, and also increases the amount of computing at the terminal. Therefore, from now on, the number of people covered by this solution is not significant, unless Some VR terminal devices with better performance, such as our VR one can run up, and Samsung's Gear VR can also run up, but like that kind of phone box must not run up."

As a result, users watching a VR live broadcast may only have 500,000 to 1,000,000 users themselves, plus the limit of terminal equipment, and the number may be even smaller. Therefore, Xu Xian thinks that it is less than the time to use NextVR's technical solutions, but he also said that the micro-whale VR will try to cooperate with NextVR in the near future, first to run through the overall flow of cooperation, and then look at the effect.

Of course, in addition to NextVR's network transmission technology, Micro whale VR also has its own optimization algorithm. At present, the Little Whale VR has a self-developed Ling Cone projection algorithm in VR live broadcasting. The transmission bandwidth can be reduced to about 50% of the original level, and the long-term goal of the technical team is to reduce to about 20-30% of the original level. At the same time, Xu Xian also believes that some of the VR-related infrastructure, including chip processing, screen display, network bandwidth, etc., these are certainly constantly evolving. "We have also made such a judgment. In the future, we can treat it as a problem. We cannot wait until all technologies are ready before we begin to do it. We should now prepare for it."

Here to say a little, the micro-whale's self-developed Ling Cone projection algorithm can compress a 6K video to the same bandwidth as 4K video, and its experience is the same as 6K video, that is, the bandwidth does not change. You can experience 6K quality. The basic principle of this algorithm is to reduce the code rate of non-important parts (such as heaven and earth) in the panoramic video, and then maintain the code rate of the important part. Of course, this algorithm is still being continuously iterated. The goal of the technical team in the future is to see where the user sees in the VR video, where the bandwidth is higher, and the bandwidth in other places is relatively low, and the system only pays attention to the user. What is the positioning of the VR machine?

After learning about the network transfer problem that I am most interested in, my next question is related to the newly released VR machine. At present, the micro-whale VR machine has started crowdfunding in Jingdong, and the crowdfunding is about to end in early October and early November. Xu Xian said that the micro whale VR will be shipped to users immediately after the end of crowdfunding.

Regarding the pressure of mass production, Xu Xian said frankly that he believes that the sales volume of VR-ones priced at RMB 3,999 will not be particularly large, so the mass production of the products is also a state of “small steps and quick runs”. "Frankly speaking, we don't have a clear sales forecast for the VR all-in-one. If you look at competing products, sales are generally not high, and our generation of products is not just for sales. Xu Xian believes that the C-side users of the micro-whale VR machine mainly include young users, digital enthusiasts or senior IT enthusiasts. These users like early adopters. Sometimes they only need one point to impress them. They will find this product to be fun and then share it with others. A more suitable example in this regard is the drone player. They may not buy a drone and do not fly once in half a year. But once they fly, they will take photos to share.

In addition to the C-end user, Xu Xian judged that the sales volume of the micro-whale VR machine to the B-end customers should be a lot. “Before we encountered a lot of B-end customers' demand for content production, we think B-end customers can still accept this kind of price, after all, this is a relatively new thing, and then it can be combined with their content. This kind of display is definitely not suitable for mobile phone boxes. The VR one is very suitable for them. In terms of content, the micro whale VR is more focused on entertainment content, which is video. For VR games, Micro Whale VR will take more cooperative approaches and include some games on its own platform. In terms of VR video, micro whale VR will focus on homemade content on the one hand, and it will also attract some CP teams to put their works on the platform of the micro whale VR. According to Xu Xian, there are already more than 100 CP teams that have reached a cooperative relationship.

VR market prospects

After talking about the VR machine, we talked to a more far-reaching topic, that is, the market prospect of VR. Xu Xian believes that the value of VR is still mainly concentrated in the entertainment field, and the popularity of VR also requires a process, just like everyone watching movies. “In the past we wanted to watch movies, we might go to the Internet to search for the seeds and then download them. Later, everyone slowly got used to buying a movie ticket to go to the cinema to watch movies. Paying has become a habit. I think VR is the same. : A user may also be in the initial contact. At the time, he did not think there was anything special. Later, there will be more and more VR content. For example, there will be a VR version of the concert, a VR version of the sports game, and a movie. Users need education, their markets need to be nurtured, and users' habits still need a training process."

In terms of popularizing VR concepts, Xu Xian thinks that it is very meaningful to popularize through the existing offline channels of micro-whales. "VR devices are also a bright spot for offline stores. Many customers visit the traditional TV stores and go away. Now that we have VR equipment, we can do some interaction with TV. We will first focus on experience." Rather than considering sales as the most important goal, we hope that more customers can experience our products on site, which can promote the education and training of VR users, and at the same time bring more customers and more customers to the stores.
