Let's live in virtual reality with "Sansar"

The picture is far and near, and the floating island that looks down from the sky is gradually getting bigger. I finally come to a moss-covered stone staircase in the middle of the island. I walk up and see a red door in front of me. As I approached slowly, a mysterious melody came from the other side of the door. But now there is nothing special behind this door. It is currently only a simple scene prop. Bjorn Laurin of the Linden Lab told me that this goalkeeper will lead to Narnia next year.

Linden Labs Works "Sansar"

Forgot to tell you that our space exists in the application of "Sansar" (previously known as "Project Sansar"), which is Linden Lab's latest virtual reality (VR) experience. As we all know, after 2005, Linden Labs released the 3D virtual work "Second Life" and became a hit. At the peak of Second Life, it attracted 1.1 million users. It is reported that "Second Life" has retained the user base of about 900,000 active users. CEO Ebbe Altberg said that they will receive $60 million in revenue by selling digital goods last year.

When VR became popular and the Oculus Rif and other titles were issued one after another, Linden Lab also hoped to transform Second Life. But to get involved in VR, companies need to do more than just add patches and upgrades, but also start working in a new virtual world. Altberg said that "Sansar" is not just a VR version of "Second Life". It is not just a common application that is compatible with various VR head phones, but it will also be a major change related to the basic structure. "Second Life" has always used a single, limited metaphor of the universe, where Linden Lab makes money from expensive virtual "land." In Sansar, the environment can be copied endlessly to accommodate more people.

The virtual world seems to be full of unknown and wonderful

At last week's VR Developers Conference, I had the privilege of experiencing the early Sansar in the Linden Lab office. After wearing the Oculus Rift head and taking the Touch motion controller, I appeared in the virtual space and started a multi-world tour. Like many VR experiences, "Sansar" lets you teleport by using the joystick, which can reduce people's discomfort in VR. The VR incarnation of Second Life has the same beautiful picture as the original, but this new VR application is obviously more attention to detail. The movement of the inner lips in sync with the real voice will also have the bumpy feeling of walking in the real world.

At present, there are already many VR social networks at different stages of development. For example, AltspaceVR attracts users in a simple form of gathering. AltspaceVR has recently conducted a series of election-related activities with NBC. The Facebook VR social team also released an early experience version of VR social applications at the OC3 conference last month. "And Sansar is doing some really cool prototypes," Altberg said. “We have more than 10 years of user content creation experience. This is very important, and no one can replicate our foundation on scale.”

Altberg believes that it is important to be able to easily create unique virtual spaces. "Most developers only copy the experience that others do," he said. "But this is different from real life. Everyone in real life has a unique style."

In "Sansar", I tried to create virtual homes with my hands, just like the ultra-simplified video game level editor. I can grab, move and rotate them by pointing at objects and make (or systematically remove) a living room. Most of Sansar’s editing features exist outside of VR. People place lights, add props, or perform other relatively complex tasks on a desktop software, but VR's resolution requirements are reduced, but even if the image is blurred, Walking around in the virtual world is also an impressive experience. Not to mention being able to stay on the virtual island or the pyramids of ancient Egypt is really interesting. To be honest, I have not seen similar settings in other VR social applications. .

Although "Second Life" was once loved by many people, it never became mainstream. The targeted group is that the high-end VR head user "Sansar" may be faced with a more severe form, and people can not help but worry about its future. However, we still hope to see more and more people use Sansar next year to live in the virtual world. After all, there are too many unknown and wonderful.
